In-Home Newborn Photographer | 4 Tips for Beautiful In-Home Newborn Photos

As an in-home newborn photographer with over 10 years of experience, I’ve learned a lot about what makes beautiful photos. One of our favorite parts about being an in-home newborn photographer is how authentically you can capture families in their own space and capture candid shots. I also think it’s a wonderful way to document this exciting phase as you welcome home a new member to the family! We can utilize whatever areas of your home (indoors or out) that you feel most proud of, or are most comfortable in.

Especially for mamas, this is a time to pamper yourself – you can buy or rent a gorgeous dress we have many vendors we recommend, get your hair and makeup done, to make sure that you feel special this day is all about you. Your body is doing amazing things and you deserve to be celebrated!

4 Tips to Help Dads Rock a Family Session

We have seen a lot of posts that focus on helping moms prepare for photography sessions. We totally get it, in most cases (but not always) it’s mom who hires the photographer, schedules the session, coordinates outfits, etc but sometimes the Dad contacts us for photoshoots also. It can be a lot of work! However, when it comes down to the day of the session dads get nervous too and are often shy in front of the camera. We like to make everyone comfortable we’re here to give some tips for the dads out there so they can rock their photo session and help make it an awesome experience resulting in gorgeous images!

Maternity photography is a unique aspect of Huey Family Photography business in Dallas Fort Worth and surrounding areas because it is one of the few instances where we’re not working with babies or children. As much as we absolutely adore working with little humans, it’s always a nice change of pace to be directing and posing adults who almost always do what we ask.

Styling for Maternity Photography

For her first outfit, Rachel chose a really sexy, form-fitting White dress. I absolutely love how this outfit shows off her beautiful curves and that gorgeous bump so well.

So, you’ve scheduled a photography session for your baby – that’s great! Now, comes the most important task of choosing outfits for your baby’s photo session.

We’re  going to walk you through what we recommend for dressing your baby at different ages and locations to hopefully give you plenty of inspiration and clarity on your upcoming photoshoot.

Dressing Your Newborn for A Photo Session

Newborn babies are so tiny and snuggly. They love to curl up and then stretch out, and keeping them comfortable can be a big part of making sure they’re happy during a photo session and . It’s also important to remember that they generally do not like being disturbed for outfit changes, we recommend for our clients 1-2 outfits.

Some families will choose one outfit for baby to wear, and then we will also do photos of baby swaddled/wrapped to keep them happy and snug. Huey Family Photography favorite baby outfits are usually rompers or matching sets. We also love keeping the hands and feet exposed so we can capture sweet detail shots of their tiny fingers and toes.

Another very popular age to schedule baby photos is around 6 to 9 months old we recommend when they generally will be able to sit up on their own. When babies reach this age they are more interactive, smiling, and so sweet. They often will have chubby arms and legs, so I recommend leaving either arms, legs, or both exposed to show off those rolls. I often photograph this age in my studio, where lighter, softer colors look just stunning. If you prefer pattern, a soft floral or stripe is perfect.

We love to also photograph sitters in just a diaper cover to really capture that precious chunk and capture detail shots. We have a few diaper covers in the studio or any bloomers/short shorts will work! Any of these outfits would also work for one year old studio sessions which is another popular time for photographing babies.

Choosing between a studio or in-home newborn session is hard for some parents, but there are very clear pros and cons to each.

Reasons for choosing an in-home newborn session

In-home newborn sessions are absolutely lovely and many families really enjoy having us come to them. No need to load everyone in the car or worry about forgetting an important item at home! Huey Family Photography can capture memories in the place that is comfortable and special to your family. So many parents put a lot of love and thought into creating a beautiful nursery for their baby, so let’s show it off! Even if your baby doesn’t sleep in their own room yet, they will be spending a lot of time in there and it will be an important space for them.

Huey Family Photography provides At-home sessions we believe sometimes it can be easier for young siblings as well. Having someone come into their own safe space is sometimes less stressful than having to take them into a completely new environment like the studio. We believe some families will have an extra set of hands rather its (grandparents, babysitters, etc.) at home to help watch over the sibling while we capture those special moments.. This can be helpful if they need a break for play, snacks, etc.

Another great idea for in-home sessions is being able to include your family’s pets. Many people including my wife and I consider their furry friends a member of their family and love the idea of having photos with them included. Huey Family Photography is comfortable working with all types of pets and love having them join in the fun.

Things to consider for a studio session

Studio newborn sessions are also really beautiful one of our favorites to capture. If you like a clean, neutral palette with gorgeous natural lighting then this might be the choice for you. We have studios we work with in Plano, Dallas,Richardson and Fort Worth. A studio is a perfect choice for a minimal aesthetic.

Some families really appreciate not having to clean their home or have someone come there and we totally understand. Huey Family Photography are happy to provide you with a clean space with natural light! It also is a great choice for families who aren’t crazy about their home’s interior, or don’t have a lot of natural light. We hav created beautiful images from small, dark places and have all the equipment for additional light! But if you really prefer the brighter look then the studio is perfect choice.
