Outdoor Maternity Session

Maternity sessions are a wonderful opportunity to take a moment and celebrate you as a couple or as a family before your new family member arrives. Especially for mamas, this is a time to pamper yourself – you can buy or rent a gorgeous dress we have many vendors we recommend, get your hair and makeup done, to make sure that you feel special this day is all about you. Your body is doing amazing things and you deserve to be celebrated!

Should you do an outdoor maternity session?

Although we don’t get a lot of snow in the Dallas Fort Worth area (which makes me a little sad) one great thing about the Allen, Mckinney, Plano, Frisco and surrounding areas is that we can have outdoor photography sessions pretty much year-round. So, as long as your photographer is flexible with rescheduling when weather isn’t ideal then there’s no reason you can’t plan a session outdoors around Dallas Fort Worth this time of year. For Kara & Kris February outdoor maternity session things started out a little dreary but by the end we had a gorgeous sunset at Lake Lewisville.

How to prepare for a outdoor maternity session

If you’re due to have a baby in the winter but still want to be able to have an outdoor session, plan to be flexible. We always recommend wear long dresses year round for mamas, but especially in the winter make sure that you have a long dress with sleeves. There are a lot of adorable maternity coats you could incorporate into an outfit as well! We always share Inspiration boards with all clients to give the ideas preparing for the shoot.

Another good idea is to always have a backup location in mind in case there is bad weather and your due date is very soon. We generally recommend scheduling maternity sessions around 29-36 weeks, which should leave plenty of time for rescheduling if necessary, but babies come when they’re ready as parents we understand and definitely don’t want you to wait until the last minute. Great thing is we have multiple studios in the Plano and Frisco Area so we certainly could use that as a backup location if there had been bad weather and her due date was soon.

If your photographer doesn’t own studio space, you can get creative and think of other indoor locations that may work. Having a maternity session in your home can be a really cozy and beautiful option and some clients are more comfortable in their own home.

Kara & Kris wanted a more romantic, natural session and I think we achieved that beautifully – I loved how we got just enough sunshine for some lovely glow in some of their photos. We got to explore Lake Lewisville a bit and get to know each other which is always our goal when working with a new family.

We will also be capturing their newborn photos with them to share soon! Kara shared some pretty awesome ideas for their baby girl’s Kodi session so I have a feeling we’re going to have a blast taking them.
